Starting YOUR Style

Where I get my inspiration from and where you can too.

Okay, so from what I have heard, the first question people ask about fashion is, “where do I get started?” and the answer is relatively simple because it is literally anywhere. So much of fashion is predicated on your own personal style, so you should draw your fashion choices based on what you surround yourself with. This transcends a singular art outlet. Look at your music taste, look at the movies you watch, and look at Instagram accounts you follow.

Another important aspect to keep in mind is that fashion should be an extension of one's individuality and not a carbon copy of another's. Thus, it is important to avoid blindly following friends and social media influencers, as this can lead to a loss of authenticity in one's style. Imitation and conformity will be the death of all fashion.

Okay, but what good would this blog be if I didn’t give any of my takes? So here is what as of late I have been drawing a lot of my inspiration from.

I find that film is a great source of inspiration.

Movies such as:

  • End of the tour

  • Good Will Hunting

  • Mid90s

  • Goodfellas

Which really could have their own blog post (and they may).

All these showcase fashion choices that transport the viewer to a specific era, giving a glimpse into the fashion trends of the time.

In addition, music is also a great source of inspiration. By understanding the fashion choices of one's favorite artists, one can gain insight into how fashion and music are intertwined.

You know how an artist will often put some classical music on prior to beginning their artwork? This is no different, I will often wake up and start playing some music and allow that to dictate what I am feeling and what I want to wear.

For me, I have found that bands such as The Smiths and Cigarettes after Sex lead to a more gloomy and darkish style while listening to The Strokes and Milky Chance, often dictates a more vibrant and upbeat outfit.

Just have fun with it and enjoy your own style. I like to think of fashion as a revolving door of “being” and not “wanting”. You do not want to have a certain style, you are a certain style. If you like someone else's style does that not mean that in some way it is also your style?

And I know, I know all of this may seem surface level and not actually anything new but the truth is, I can’t tell you what to buy at what stores, because that wouldn’t be your style. Brands don’t work the same for every person. I could tell you that Uniqlo has great essentials to help complete and start a wardrobe but it is not gonna be the same for everyone. And if that is what you want, don’t worry, I’ll come out with more opinionated blogs later.

I hate, well hate is a strong word, I don’t like when people tell me that they wish they had a better sense of style, or when they say they don’t know where to start. The first step is stepping outside of your comfort zone and taking risks. Sure maybe that first risk might be met with criticism but I promise you the more risks you take the more they will start to pay off. Also, who cares what others think. Life is too short to not do what you want at that moment, or at least that is how I rationalize my decisions.
